What to Know

For patients renewing their Washington medical marijuana card for the first time, there are some helpful things you should know:

  • document

    Patient Certification

Washington medical marijuana patients do not need to see the same doctor who issued their initial medical cannabis authorization form. Any medical marijuana doctor approved by the state can evaluate medical conditions and issue a medical cannabis authorization.

You don’t need to use the same doctor, and you don’t need to use the same service. If you got your initial medical cannabis authorization at a local healthcare facility or through another online provider, you can still complete your renewal with Leafwell online.

  • Renewal Frequency

Washington medical marijuana cards are valid for one year and can be renewed online. Plus, when you renew with Leafwell, we’ll send you a reminder 30 days before your medical cannabis authorization expires so you can avoid a lapse in coverage.

Getting a Washington Medical Marijuana Card

Once you have your medical cannabis authorization form, you can shop for medical marijuana. But you’ll need to get into the medical cannabis authorization database if you want a physical medical cannabis card. You can do this in any medically endorsed retail store. They’ll take your photo, register you into the medical cannabis database, and provide an official card.

There are real benefits to getting a marijuana card in Washington. Qualifying patients and designated providers can only purchase as non-patients if they don’t have a card. That means you’ll also pay tax when you purchase medical cannabis, unlike those with a marijuana card in Washington.

Next Steps After Approval

Congrats on getting your medical marijuana authorization! With this form, you can purchase medical cannabis, so you don’t need to do anything else. If you’d like a physical medical cannabis recognition card, you’ll need to get entered into the medical cannabis authorization database. (We highly suggest you do this because a medical marijuana patient in the database has more legal benefits than one not in the system.) Medical cannabis patients who want to be registered in the medical cannabis database will need:

  • Medical Marijuana Authorization: This is the form medical marijuana patients receive in the mail after meeting with a healthcare practitioner and getting approved for renewal.
  • Photo ID: For confirmation at medically endorsed retail stores.

An adult medical marijuana patient who chooses to enroll in the state registry is required to pay a $1 fee for the medical cannabis card. Keep in mind the law does not restrict retail stores from charging more than the $1. The average cost for each medical cannabis card may be between $1 and $10 (or more) depending on which store you go to.

Caregivers

Caregivers are called designated providers in Washington, and they cannot serve multiple qualifying patients. Medical marijuana patients may designate on their medical marijuana certification someone to purchase their marijuana product and/or grow the marijuana for them. The “designated provider” will also receive an exact copy of the patient’s medical cannabis authorization form printed on tamper-proof paper. You’ll use this at a store to get your designated provider recognition card in Washington.

Each patient and “designated provider” must have their own medical marijuana authorization form provided by the patient’s health care practitioner. Minor patients (under age 18) are required by law to have a designated provider and to be entered into the medical cannabis database. A minor’s designated provider can be their legal guardian.

FAQs

Is medical marijuana the same as recreational in Washington?

In Washington, the medical cannabis market and the regulated recreational cannabis market have been integrated. That means the Washington State Department has requirements for all usable cannabis and cannabis infused product. But while the products are similar, you'll experience some differences depending on whether you're a medical marijuana patient. Medical cannabis patients get tax breaks on their medical marijuana purchases as long as they're entered into the medical marijuana database. Medical marijuana patients entered into the medical marijuana authorization database also have protection from arrest and prosecution related to using their medical cannabis card. So, while the products may not be different, the experience of being a medical cannabis patient is different from being a recreational cannabis user in Washington.

How is the process different for minor patients in Washington?

A minor marijuana patient in Washington is required to have a designated provider. For minors, it's required that this is a parent or legal guardian. (Households with two minor patients should note that designated providers cannot have more than one qualifying patient, so you'll likely need both parents to become designated providers.) The healthcare practitioner will sign and issue (2) original authorizations and have the parent or legal guardian who is the designated provider sign both authorizations on behalf of the minor patient. Authorizations for minors are valid for 6 months.

If I have a terminal condition, can I get a lifetime certification in Washington?

Unfortunately, no. The law requires that all adult patients in Washington state have an annual exam with a health care practitioner and get their authorization renewed each year. Patients under the age of 18 must be seen by their authorized healthcare practitioner every six months.
