Fungal Infections

Cannabis for Fungal Infections

Fungal infections can range from the mild to the extremely deadly. Fungal infections are generally very difficult to treat because, unlike bacteria, fungi are eukaryotes (organisms whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles). Thankfully, most fungal infections affect only the skin, and are not deadly. Fungi are immensely important for the development of antivirals and antibiotics.

The CDC has released a study showing that cannabis use can lead to a slightly increased chance of contracting a deadly fungal infection in those with a compromised immune system. This is not due to the properties of cannabinoids themselves, but because of fungus and mold growing on cannabis plants that have not been properly grown, stored and/or tested.

However, when it comes to cannabinoids themselves, they display plenty of antimicrobial activity, including antifungal. Cannabigerol (CBG), Cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabidiol (CBD) seem to be the most promising antifungal cannabinoids. Cannabinoids represent a class of compound that could be very helpful in reducing antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal resistance.
